00:00, 29 APR 2011Updated16:32, 26 FEB 2013ACTRESS Brenda Blethyn has revealed how adopting a Geordie accent for her latest major TV role has been "scary". She is starring as DCI Vera Stanhope in ITV's new blockbuster burberry outlet sawgrass murder mystery jackets burberry on sale Vera. Brenda, who was born in Kent, said: "It is notoriously difficult to do a North Eastern accent and that was the scary thing for me. "I had some training, but as we were filming here, I would go into town and talk to people. "At one point I was staying by myself in a lovely apartment and I felt like I was in solitary confinement. So I asked to be moved buy burberry online out so I could meet people." Brenda was at the Tyneside Cinema yesterday to attend the premiere of Vera, along with North Easterner David Leon, who plays her long suffering sidekick Sgt Joe Ashworth. The series, which starts on Sunday, features a star studded cast including Peterlee born Gina McKee, Hugo Speer, Daniela Nardini, John Lynch and Kieran O'Brien. Brenda, 65, said: "In the first episode there were a host of wonderful actors like Gina, who would help me with the accent. "Then I would watch The X Factor and listen to Cheryl Cole. Brenda, 65, said: "When I was asked to do this I went straight out and got the books and found them gripping. "I didn't know what this character was going to be like and I was thinking 'move over Helen Mirren', then this fat, dishevelled woman appeared and I thought 'hang on!'." Vera is a complex character, a woman who has a burberry coat sale outlet shrewd mind, but who also enjoys bagging a bargain at the supermarket. Brenda said: "Vera is like a breath of fresh air. I love her. She is scruffy and looks a bit like a bag lady, but she has progressed up the ranks of the police force. "She is not someone who looks into the mirror, she's not vain." She adds: "In the book Vera is bigger than I am but they bulked me up. She couldn't be exactly like the book where she has a skin condition and is scratching all the time. That would put people off their dinner!" The project was commissioned after one of the TV company's executives Elaine Collins bought the first Vera Stanhope novel, The Crow Trap, in an Oxfam shop. It has been filmed over the last two years across the North East at locations such as Newcastle's Quayside, North Shields and Dunstanburgh Castle. Brenda said: "The landscape is like a character in the show. I would love to film here again as it is so beautiful. There was one point we were filming on the highest hill in Northumberland and it was spectacularly beautiful.
And another day we'd be on a very rugged coastline. "That is juxtaposed in the show with the inner city hit by the loss of the shipbuilding and mining industries.".
